1. Peeling, Cracking, or Blistering Paint
This is the big one. When paint peels, cracks, or bubbles, the seal is broken and water can reach the wood underneath. The longer you wait, the more prep, and sometimes repair, the next paint job will need.
2. Faded or Chalky Color
If your siding looks washed out, or you get a chalky residue on your hand when you rub it, the paint has worn down. Our strong summer sun fades color over time. Faded paint is also a sign the protective layer is thinning.
3. Bare Wood Showing Through
Any spot where you can see bare wood or exposed siding is an open door to moisture. These areas need attention quickly, before rot sets in.
4. Cracked or Missing Caulk
Caulk seals the gaps around windows, doors, and trim. When it cracks or pulls away, water sneaks in. Re-caulking is usually part of a good repaint, so failing caulk is a clear signal.
5. Stains, Mildew, or Mold
Our humid summers love to grow mildew and mold on shaded walls. A little can be washed off, but if it keeps coming back, fresh paint with the right prep can help keep it away.
6. Soft or Rotted Wood
Press on your trim or siding. If it feels soft or spongy, water has already gotten in. That wood may need repair before painting, which is why catching the earlier signs saves money.
7. You're Just Tired of the Color
Sometimes the paint is fine, but the look is dated. A fresh color is one of the cheapest ways to make your home feel new again, and it boosts curb appeal if you're thinking about selling.
