How to Prep Your Home's Exterior Before a New Jersey Winter

J. Munoz Construction March 2026 4 min read

New Jersey winters don't mess around. Snow, ice, freezing rain, and wind can find every weak spot in your home's exterior. A little prep in the fall saves you from leaks, drafts, and emergency repairs in January. Here's a simple checklist to get your home ready.

Check Your Roof

Your roof is your first line of defense against snow and ice. Look for loose, cracked, or missing shingles, and check the flashing around chimneys and vents. Small issues now can become big leaks once ice and snow pile up.

Clean the Gutters

Clogged gutters are a winter nightmare. When water can't drain, it backs up, freezes, and forms ice dams that push water under your roof. Clear out the leaves and debris before the first freeze, and make sure downspouts carry water away from the foundation.

Inspect Siding and Trim

Walk your home and look at the caulk, gaps, and any damaged siding. These openings let cold air and moisture in. Sealing them up keeps your home warmer and stops water from sneaking behind the walls when it freezes and expands.

Seal Windows and Doors

Drafty windows and doors drive up heating bills all winter. Check the weatherstripping and caulk around the frames. A few dollars of sealant can make a noticeable difference in comfort and cost.

Protect Outdoor Surfaces

Cracks in your driveway, walkway, or steps get worse when water freezes inside them. Sealing or repairing them in the fall stops the freeze-thaw cycle from turning a small crack into a big one.

Don't Forget the Little Things

  • Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses and spigots
  • Trim branches that could fall under snow load
  • Check that attic insulation and ventilation are solid
  • Make sure exterior lights work on those dark evenings
